(C) 100 Days and 99 Nights Alan Madison
This book is about a girl named Esme; her real name is Esmeralda Swishback McCarther. She lives in a house with her mom, dad, a dog named Napoleon, two hamster named Lee and Grant, goldfish and her brother Ike, whose real name is Isaac. She has ever letter in the alphabet represented through her stuffed animals that she keeps on her bed; her dad calls it a bedzoo. She also has a pinkish- blue blanket that she got from her grandma. Her father is Sergeant August Aloysius McCarther III and he is in the army, just like all the men on his side of the family was. The chapters then are entitled and have a little blurb under them of each of her stuffed animal. Before school, the family had the same routine that Esme loved. She then would go to school with her teacher Ms. Pitcher. She decided that she wanted to go into the army, and then be a writer like her mom and her maternal side of her family. The best thing about her routine was on Saturdays, when everyone would wake up and her father would make the best pancakes. He had his own pancake rules, and everyone followed. One Saturday, her dad mentioned that he will be going away for 100 days and 99 nights. Her dad told her that she would have to be the boss of the pancakes when he was gone, and she gave him her beloved blanket.
Grandpa came over one Saturday and took the kids out of the house for the day, so the mom had time to herself. The children talked about if all dads come back from the war, and grandpa didn’t lie, and said only the lucky ones do. That night Esme had a terrible dream, and went to sleep with her mom, who she realized was the bravest person she knows. Finally the day had come, and dad came home. Everyone was so excited when he arrived. The first thing he did when he got into the house was make his famous pancakes for dinner.

(C) Bridge to Terabithia By Katherine Paterson
Jesse Oliver Aaron Jr. lives with four sisters, Ellie, Brenda, Joyce Ann and May Belle, and his parents. Every day when his dad gets up for work, he gets up to and goes to run, because he wants to be the fastest kid at school. Lark Creek Elementary school was not a rich school, so the boys in the lower grades had to run races at recess. After his run, he milked Miss Bessie and while doing that he noticed a family moving into the old Perkins place.. Jess loved to draw and the only person who liked his drawings was Miss Edmunds, which was his music teacher.. He did not win though, Leslie did. Leslie won all the heats of the race, and was the first girl to run with them. Jess and Leslie became better friends and Leslie told him that she left her old rich school because her parents wanted to live a simpler life. Money was not a problem to them. Jess didn’t understand this because money was always a problem for him. On the bus that day, Jess saved Leslie from the mean girl on the bus and they decided that they needed a place just for the two of them. They went to the rope over the gully and found a place in the woods. They named the place Terabithia. The made a castle from things behind the barn, and won’t tell anyone about the place. They make up stories about how giants attack Terabithia. They pretend the giants are Janice Avery, because she is the meanest girl in school. She stole from May Belle, which really upset Jess. To get back to Janice, they wrote a note from her crush Willard to meet her after school because he was in love with her. Janice was completely embarrassed and mad because it wasn’t true and people made fun of her. Christmas was just around the corner, and Jess got Leslie a puppy. The named the puppy Prince Terrain, P.T. for short. The puppy was the guardian of Terabithia. Leslie got Jess a pad of paper and color to draw things for the castle. After Christmas, Leslie was really busy with her dad, so Jess didn’t get to see her much. He then offered to help, so they hung out a lot more. One day at school, Janice was crying in the bathroom. Leslie went in to find out what was wrong. Apparently her father has been beating her and she blabbed to her friends. They all make fun of her now and whisper about her because you don’t talk about your parents like that. Leslie calmed her down, and they are civil now with each other. It has been raining for a few days now, and the creek has been getting higher and higher. Leslie wants to go to church with the Aarons for Easter, and they let her. She loved church, but doesn’t think she believes in the bible. The next week it is still raining, but they still go over to Terabithia. It was really scary but they made it back and forth. Finally when the rained stopped, Miss Edmunds called and asked if Jess wanted to go to Washington to the museum, and asked Jess if he wanted to go along. He slyly asked his mom while she was asleep and then left for a wonderful day with the teacher he is in love with. When he returned everyone looked worried. One of his sisters announced that his girlfriend was dead and they thought he was too. The rope over to Terabithia broke, and she must have fell in the water and hit her head. They found her that afternoon. Jess blamed himself because he should have asked if she could come along, then she would not have went to Terabithia by herself. Jess was angry and sad, and even condolences by his teacher didn’t help. His dad sat him down after he threw all of his paint in the water. They went to say their condolences to the family, and Jess even got to keep P.T. when they went to Pennsylvania for the funeral. When he finally calmed down, he went to Terabithia. When he was over there, he heard May Belle yelling for help. She came to make sure he was okay, and Jess helped her across the river. Later that week, he built a bridge to Terabithia. When May Belle asked what he was doing he brought her over the bridge and told her she was going to be the new queen of Terabithia.

(C) Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith
Henry lives with his mom, dad, brother and sister. The only thing Henry will eat is chocolate. One day he didnt feel right. He began to get brown freckles on his skin. The teachers watched as the multpiled and sent him to the emergency room. The doctors said that the spots were chcolate. He ran away from the hospital then and was picked up by Mac. The truck was highjacked and the police came. The moral of the story was that too much of one thing can really hurt.

(C) Chrysanthemum By Kevin Henkes
A baby was born to very happy parents, and they had to have the perfect name for her. The named her Chrysanthemum. When Chrysanthemum was old enough, she learned to love her name. She loved her name, until school started and when the teacher said her name everyone laughed. As you can see on the page everyone name is really short and easy names. Everyone made fun of her long name and that she was named after a flower. She was upset.Chrysanthemum ran home crying saying school just was not for her. Her parents reassured her that her name was absolutely perfect. Her parents then made her, her favorite meal and played her favorite game. The next day at school was not much better. Everyone said that she even looks like a flower and they should smell and pick her. She, once again, thought her name was absolutely dreadful. The next day in class, they met their music teacher Mrs. Twinkle. She had a beautiful voice and was pregnant. She assigned roles for the class musicale and Chrysanthemum was assigned to be a daisy. Three students named Jo, Rita and Victoria thought it was absolutely hilarious that she was a daisy and made fun of her until Mrs. Twinkle came over. Mrs. Twinkle shared that her name is long, and would barely fit on her name tag, and she was named after a flower as well. She shared her name was Delphinium and was thinking that her baby’s name would be Chrysanthemum because it is an absolutely perfect name. The three girls were speechless, and then said for people to call them Marigold, Carnation, and Lily, all after flowers. Chrysanthemum then found her name was absolutely perfect. In the Epilogue, it says that the class musicale was a great success, and Mrs. Twinkle gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Chrysanthemum.

(C) Freak the Mighty By Rodman Philbrick
Max did not have a brain before Kevin came along. Max was known as the Kicker back in daycare because he liked to kick everything. He lived with his grandparents, Gram and Grim. During daycare Max met Kevin “Freak”. He was the kid with the crutches, but he disappeared. Max is called Mad Max now or other mean names. He always overhears people talking about how much he looks like his dad, because of how tall and built he is. Max lives in the basement at his grandparent’s house, and one day he was playing in his backyard and saw a crippled yellow haired midget with a normal size head and a twisted small body. Max remembered him as the robot kid at daycare. Later that day, Max saw that Kevin was trying to get something in the tree. He went over to help and noticed how Freak talks like he is reciting the dictionary. Max helps Kevin get the object out of the tree and goes to see his room. Freak’s mother, Fair Gwen, came over to get Freak and she was scared when she first saw Max and freaked out. Later that night she realized the mistake she made and thought that Max was his father Kenny; she apologized and invited him over for dinner. Gwen tells Max that his mom and she were good friends, and she never liked his father, who is in jail. Max and Freak become great friends. They have many adventures over the summer together. Unfortunately,
one night Kenny breaks into the house and kidnaps Max and takes him to Iggy’s house. The cops are out now, so Kenny takes him to an old woman’s house and ties him up so he doesn’t move. Kenny keeps telling his son that there is no way he killed someone and he was just misunderstood. Max just fears for his life. Kenny tells him that they are going to move south together where no one will find them. He moves Max to a dark basement while he goes out for a bit, and when he does Loretta comes and tries to untie him. Kenny comes back early and catches Loretta and starts choking her. The only way Max think he can help is to shout that he saw him kill his mother, and that he knows he did it. After a little bit, Kenny gets off of Loretta, but starts choking Max. Freak arrives with a water gun and tells everyone that sulfuric acid is in it and squirts Kenny in the eye. That gives Max enough time to grab Freak and get out of there. Freak admits that there was only soap, vinegar and curry powder in the gun, but Max is just happy he is safe with the police. Loretta is okay as well, but she does have a broken neck. Kenny is places back in jail, and there is no trial because he pleaded guilty. It is now Kevin’s 13th birthday, and he gets the computer he away wanted. Right after cake Kevin has a seizure and it taken to the hospital by ambulance. Max is not allowed to ride along so he follows the ambulance by running next to it. Kevin is placed in the ICU and he knows he doesn’t have much time left. He gives a book to Max for him to write down all the adventures they had, and reassures him he won’t have time because he will be too busy with his new body. Although, there is no new body and Kevin passes away the next day because his heart was too big for his body. The nurse says the lie was a little bit of hope that he had, but was never true. Max is so upset about Kevin dying that he smashes through the lab, showing he may have violent tendencies, and also when you remember that he hit the nurse when he was upset. Max is still upset that Kevin is no longer there, but he starts writing his book about all the adventures to have.

(C) Judy Moody Was in a Mood By Megan McDonald
The book starts out saying that summer was over, and Judy did not want to go back to school. She was in a bad mood. Her mother came in to get her up, and Judy was in such a bad mood she roared. Judy got up and got dressed in pajamas to go to school. She was upset because she didn’t go anywhere over summer. She did remember that she ate a shark on a fishing trip, so she wrote that on her shirt and drew a shark on it as well.
She met Rocky on the bus and he asked her if she was in a bad mood. She made it to her third grade classroom with her teacher Mr. Todd. There was no porcupine, but he did have a turtle named Tucson. She was placed in the front row of the classroom next to Frank the paste eater. The class starts and instead of doing the ordinary, they are to make a me collage so that the rest of the class can get to know them. During a spelling exercise, Judy was still in a bad mood, and it showed. Mr. Todd was going to ask her to get the pizza that was a surprise, but instead he asked Rocky, because she was in a bad mood. That night, Frank called Judy to see if she could go to her party but she blew him off. Then Rocky called and asked if she could go to Vic’s mini market, and her mom said she could only if she would bring Stink with. Judy collects band aids because she wants to be a doctor. Later that night, the family went to the pet store to look for a pet. Instead of getting an animal, they buy a Venus flytrap and she cannot wait to bring it to school. She named it Jaws Judy got her new doll in the mail finally, and it is a doctor doll. Stink broke the doll for a little, but then she fixed it and made it all better. It then rained for a couple of days, so Judy and Rocky went out to catch toads. The same toad peed on both of them so they made the club The Toad Pee Club. They need a club for their collage so they will use the T.P. Club. The Saturday that Frank parties is on came. She bought herself a tadpole kit, but was told to give it to Frank instead. When she showed up to the party, she was the only girl. She didn’t want to stay but her parents already left. All the boys left, so Frank went up to his room with Judy and showed her all of his collections. Judy actually enjoyed looking at all the stuff and the asked him if he really eats paste, which he does not. Judy’s brother was going on a class trip to the president’s house in Washington D.C. To get back at him for leaving her at home, she hid a fake hand in the toilet and waited for Stink to find it. He did and screamed. Her brother then spilled juice on her me collage, but instead of getting mad she made it into a picture instead. She presented the collage, and got raving reviews. After the presentation her parents took Stink, Frank, Rocky, and Judy to get ice cream. Frank still didn’t finish his collage because he didn’t have a club. Judy told him to pick up the toad, and the toad peed in his hands. They all laughed and that is how the book ends.

(P) Snow Music By Lynn Rae Perkins
The town is silent at night when the snow falls. A boy wakes up to look outside and his dog runs away. On his journey to find his dog, he sees a bid hopping and a deer in the snow. He sees a squirrel looking for its nuts that it buried before the snow. He finds a friend and they look together for the dog. They see a car go by, where a little child is drawing on the window and they see a plow go by that is plowing the streets and salting the road. The sun came out and started melting all the snow. The boy finds the dog and puts a lease on him. The next night the snow begins to fall again and then the last page is a snow globe that looks like the scene of the book.
I love the illustrations in the book. They are beautiful and the scenery is wonderful. I like the book because it has a lot of onomatopoeia, and all the noises everything makes, which could make it a very fun book to read to children. I like how the end of the book shows that the book was about a town in a snow globe as well. I really like this book also because it is a nice, easy, and calm book to read to a class when they are all excited about the snow coming.

(P) Snowflakes Fall By Patricia MacLachlan
The first thing I notice is how beautiful the illustrations are. The book starts with saying that once the flowers are gone the snowflakes fall, all different patterns. They fall all over, and no two are the same, even though they are all beautiful. At night, the snow may be scary but when day comes it is beautiful again. In the snow, you can make footprints and so can animals and sleds. You can make forts, snowman, and snow angels as well. Once the sun starts to shine again and the flowers begin to bloom, the children remember the snowflakes all different, yet beautiful and we remember the children all different, yet all beautiful.
