(P)The Butterfly By Patricia Polacco
Monique lives in Choisey-le Roi, which is outside of Paris. Her village is occupied by Nazi Troops. Monique went to sleep with Pinouff, her cat, by her side and when she awoke there was a ghost girl sitting at the end of her bed After school the next day she saw Nazi soldiers take away Monsieur Marks violently. They cried to their mothers, and asked why. They responded that Nazi’s do not like Jews, like Monsieur Marks. It was a while until Monique saw the ghost again, but when she did she caught it before she ran away. The girls name was Sevrine, and lives at Monique’s house. Sevrine then showed Monique where she and her family live. They live in a trap room in her house. Monique asked how her mom didn’t know they were there, but it turns out Madame Solliliage has helped a lot of Jews get away from the Nazis. The girls were spotted and had to leave at once.. Monique lost her mother at the train station an couldn’t find her mother anywhere. She made it home and went to sleep, to awake to her mother getting home. When she was out in the garden next day, she saw a bunch of butterflies flying around her head. Monique believes it is a sign that Sevrine and her family are safe.

(P) Freedom Summer By Deborah Wiles
John Henry Waddell is Joe’s best friend. John Henry’s mother, Annie Mae, works for Joe’s mother and in the summer John Henry comes with his mother to Joe’s house. The two boys help Annie Mae; until it gets too hot then they go into the Creek. John Henry is a very good swimmer, but he is not allowed in the town pool with Joe because of his skin color. When they are swimming, they talk about what they want to be when they grow up; they both want to be firemen.
After their dip, they both go to town and Joe buys an ice pop for the both of them, because John Henry cannot go into the store. At dinner that night, Joe gets the new from his father that there is no more law that the blacks and the whites have to be separated. The next day, the two boys go to the swimming pool to swim, but it was filled up with black tar. Both the boys know that it was because some white people didn’t want the black people swimming in their pool. Instead of going to the pool they decided to go into the store and get ice pops together.

(P) The Memory Coat By Elvira Woodruff
A young girl named Rachel and her cousin Grisha, lived with Rachel’s family in Russia. Grisha had a very thin coat, but always refused a new one because he liked his coat the way it was.
Then one day, Cossacks were coming to kill all the Jewish people. The grandparents stated that Russia is no longer a safe place to live, and they should move to America. They started the journey, but they all worried about getting to Ellis Island and being rejected because they were not healthy or wealthy enough. They said that they must get rid of Grisha’s coat because it looks bad. He denied getting rid of it. Rachel announced that he like the coat so much because it was lined with his mother’s wool coat, and every time he puts it on he can feel her presences. The family was worried he would not get through, so Rachel turned his coat inside out and showed the beautiful wool from the mother’s coat. He stood in line again and passed the examination. They made it to American and stayed together. The coat was passed down from generation to generation and the story remains of a mother’s love she put into the coat.

(P) When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest
Jessie’s grandmother taught her how to read and write in English and to sew when she was young. Jessie was selected to go to America to sew in New York. She left her grandmother and wrote to her all the time. She met a guy, named Lou, on the ship and went to school to learn. Lou took her home to his family and proposed. Jessie told him to wait. Meanwhile, she saved all of her money from sewing to fly her grandmother to New York. She brought the ring with her and a wedding for Jessie would finally happen. I thought this was a sweet story about how your hard work does pay off in the end and that good things can eventually happen. It is also during a time most young children aren’t familiar with and I believe it is portrayed well throughout this book.
