C) Hunger Games: Catching Fire By Suzanne Collins
Catching Fire is the title of the second book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. The book starts out with Katniss Everdeen in the woods dreading the upcoming Victory Tour. Katniss is best friends with Gale Hawthorn, who she only gets to see on Sundays now, when they hunt for food together. Gale’s father and Katniss’s father were both killed in an explosion together, leaving Katniss with her mother and sister Prim, and Gale with his mother and 3 younger brothers Rory, Vick and Posy. In the first book, Katniss and Peeta Mellark won the 74th Hunger Games together, using their young love for a strategy of survival. Haymitch, a victor of the 50th Hunger Games, was their mentor, and all three live in Victors Village together in the 12th District. Katniss leaves the woods and is greeted at her house by President Snow, the President of the Capitol. He says that Katniss rebelled against the Hunger Games when she picked up the berries and was about to commit suicide. It has brought a lot of defiance in other districts, and Katniss and her loved ones could be killed if she cannot convince the districts and Snow that she is in love with Peeta, and that it what made her pick up the berries, not to defy the Hunger Games. Snow also explains how Seneca Crane, the Head Game Maker, was killed because he let two victors win last Hunger Games. Snow leaves her with the thought that he knows she kissed Gale in the woods, which means she has been watched, even when she thinks that she hasn’t. Later that night, the cameras come in and she and Peeta have a long kiss while everyone watches through the lens. After the camera show, Peeta, Katniss, and Haymitch board the train to go on their Victory Tour through the other districts. After a day on the train, they start at district 11, which is the home of Rue; a friend of Katniss is the games, and Thresh, both killed in the 74th Hunger Games. Peeta offers the families of the deceased part of his winning, whereas Katniss thanks and apologizes to the families. An old man presses his three middle fingers on his lips and then extends them, showing the sign from District 12 and a sign of defiance. They kill the man with a shot to the head, and all of the districts are a blur of reading a notecard written by Effie. Once they reach the Capitol, Peeta and Katniss have become somewhat closer friends. Katniss realizes that eventually she will have to marry Peeta, to prove that they are in love. Peeta proposes and Snow still does not believe them. They make it back to District 12 for the final party. At the Mayor’s house, while Katniss is looking for her friend, she spots a TV that confirms there is an uprising going on in District 8. She then goes to the party to eat and dance. Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Head Game Maker, cuts in to dance with Katniss and they talk for a while, until Katniss is tired and leaves. The next morning, she meets Gale in the woods and talks about running away because Snow did not believe that she and Peeta were in love. He is all for it until she doesn’t say she loves him back , and says that she is bring Peeta with. Gale said he would rather start an uprising and leaves. Katniss goes after him and finds him getting whipped by the new Head Peacemaker, because he was looking for the old one to bring his game too, which is illegal. Katniss tries to stop and gets whipped in the face. Peeta and Haymitch stop the whipping eventually, and they bring Gale to Katniss’s house because her mother is a natural healer.
Katniss runs away out into the woods again, where she finds Bonnie and Twill, two people that ran away from the uprising in District 8. They believe that there is a District 13, and are heading there. Katniss does not believe them and leaves them with food. She returns to an electric fence that is on, which is proof that the Capitol has been watching her, and knows she passed the fence. She gets over the fence, breaking her heel, and makes it back to the house. The TV shows her wedding dress shows, and then talks about the Quarter Quell, the 75th Hunger Games. The spokesperson announces that this Hunger Games is a battle between the Victors, meaning since she is the only girl victor in District 12, she is going back into the Hunger Games. She runs away again and gets drunk with Haymitch. She tries to convince Haymitch is play for Peeta, but when Haymitch’s name is called, Peeta volunteer as tribute. Peeta and Katniss are taken without being able to say goodbye, both believing that they made deals with Haymitch the save the other. Cinna, Katniss’s stylist, dresses her in flames of course, for the showing and during the talk on the TV, Peeta announces that Katniss and he are married and Katniss is pregnant. All the victors hold hands, and once again show a sign of rebellion. Haymitch is once again their mentor, and explains to them that they need to find partners. During the training area Katniss picks people that are not really the first picks, but Haymitch has his own plan. At the end of the training area, Peeta draws a picture of Rue in the flowers dying, and Katniss hangs a dummy with Seneca Cane name on it; another sign of rebellion shown. The games begin right before Katniss witnesses the death of Cinna. She is worked up but teams up with Finnick and Mags. Katniss knows the Finnick is with them because he saves Peeta when they hit the force field and he dies for a little. A sponsor sends a contraption for them to drink from the trees, and they are fine until a poisonous gas hits them. Mags commit suicide and walks into the gas to save the other three. After they escape the gas and find that salt water heals their wounds, monkeys appear and the girl from District 6 saves Katniss, but kills herself. Back on the beach, they team up with Johanna, Beete, and Wiress. Together they decode the game, seeing it is a big clock and each hour something different happen, and at midnight and noon a bolt of lightning strikes a tree. After a fight scene where Wiress dies, and Jabber jays yelling in voices of loved ones, Beete devises a plan that will hopefully kill off the ones not in their group. When Johanna and Katniss are helping set up the plan, Johanna hits Katniss over the head, takes out her tracking devise, and saves her by taking two people in the opposite direction that she is. Katniss staggers up and shoots an arrow in the sky with the electric hooked up to it and destroys the force field.
She is then picked up by a Hovercraft with Haymitch, Finnick and Plutarch in it. They explain there is a District 13, and that is where they are headed. Peeta didn’t make it into their Hovercraft and it taken by the Capitol. All the districts are in a rebellion and they made this plan to other throw the Capitol, because Katniss is the Mocking jay of revolution. The book ends when Gale comes in and says that her mom and Prim are safe, and that District 12 was destroyed.

(P) The Gruffalo By Julia Donaldson
The first thing I noticed about this book is it rhymes. There is a mouse taking a stroll through the woods and a fox thinks he looks tasty so asked him if he wants to eat lunch at his underground house. The mouse declines and says he is eating with the gruffalo. The fox asked the mouse what a gruffalo is and the mouse explains that he has terrible tusks and terrible claws, teeth and jaws. The mouse also says that he is meeting the gruffalo right here, and that his favorite food is a roasted fox. The fox ran away as the mouse laughed because there is no such thing as a gruffalo. After the fox, the mouse meets an owl, snake, and then all of sudden he sees the gruffalo that he had described. The gruffalo said his favorite food was a mouse on bread. The mouse then said that he is the scariest thing in the woods and that if the gruffalo walks behind him everyone will be afraid of him. The find the snake and he slides away in fear and the see the owl, which flies away because he is scared too. They then see the fox and the fox hides in his hole because he is scared as well. The mouse then says that he was right and everyone in the woods was afraid of him. The mouse then states that his favorite food is gruffalo crumble. The gruffalo ran away. After the gruffalo ran away the mouse found a nut and enjoyed his nut in peace, in the woods.

(P) I Need My Monster By Amanda Noll
Ethan looked under his bed to see his monster Gabe, but all there was, was note saying that Gabe will be back in a week. Ethan needs a monster under his bed to sleep, so he needed to do something. Ethan missed Gabe’s ragged breathing, nose-whistling, and uncut claws. Ethan had to find another monster to put under his bed. He goes under his bed and knocks on the floorboard and waits. The first monster appeared and his name was Herbert. Ethan was not scared, so he sent Herbert packing and waited for another one. The next monster that came was named Ralph. Ethan said he needed a monster with scary claws, not manicured claws like Ralph, so he sent him packing and waited for another monster. Cynthia came next, and she had scary claws, but she was girl monster, and Ethan did not like that, so he sent her packing as well He wondered if he was being too picky, but he then realized the only way he will stay in bed would be if there was a scary monster under his bed. He wondered what would happen if he didn’t stay in bed because there wasn’t a scary monster. Mack came up next, and he had the right size claws and he was a boy monster, but he had a big not so scary tongue that made Ethan laugh. He rejected Mack, but Mack said that he shouldn’t because there isn’t another monster that will come because he is so picky. Finally Gabe came back because he didn’t like fishing. He said that Ethan was a challenge because he is almost too old to scare anymore. Gabe then scared Ethan so much, and at that moment Ethan and Gabe knew they were made for each other. Ethan was happy that Gabe was back and everything was back to normal. He then fell asleep in no time, even though he was scared.

(P) The Lorax By Dr. Seuss
Dr. Seuss is famous for writing books that sometimes don’t make sense. They rhyme and they have made up words in them. The Lorax starts out on the Street of the Lifted Lorax, where no birds sing, and it is at the end of town. If you look close enough, you can see when there Lorax once sat, but he was taken from there. The Once-ler still lives there, so the little boy must ask him about the Lorax. The Once-ler lives on top of his store, and if you pay he will tell you about the Lorax. The bucket of payment comes down and the boy drops in his stuff, and the Once-ler counts the money, and then tells him that the story is for his ear only, so he sends down a phone. He tells the story to the little boy about the Lorax getting lifted away. The story starts out back when the town was still colorful and hopping. The Truffula Trees were colorful and everywhere you look. There were Brown Bar-ba-loots, Swoomee-Sawns, humming fish, and the Once-ler loved the tress so much that he built a house and used the tress to knit a thneed. The tree that he chopped down, a man popped out of the stump, he was short, old and brown and mossy and very bossy. The man said he spoke for the trees, and asked the Once-ler what he made out of the trees. He showed the Lorax what he had made, but the Lorax was not impressed and called him greedy. The Once-ler sold the thneed and called all of his family to come up to his house and cut down the Truffula trees to make more thneeds to get rich. The Lorax showed up again and said he not only speaks for the trees but the Bar-ba-loot as well. He said they would eat the fruit from the trees, but now that the trees are being cut down, there is not enough food for them to eat. The bear then left to find something to eat. The factory grew, and so did the smoke and the Swoomee-Swans could not sing because they had smog in their throat. The Swans could not stay so they left too. The factory also threw out its old waste, and it went into the humming fish’s home. The humming fish could not stay the Lorax said, and yelled at the Once-ler again. The very last tree was cut down, and everyone left, there were no more thneeds to be made, and only the Lorax was left.
The Lorax then left, and all that he left behind was stones in a pile that read UNLESS. The Once-ler finally got it, that the word unless means nothing will get better, unless someone cares a lot. The Once-ler gave the boy a Truffula seed, and told him to plant it so that all of his friends will come back

C) Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH By Robert C. O’Brien
Mrs. Frisby is a head of a field mice family. She and her four children are living under a vegetable garden on Mr. Fitzgibbon’s farm. She is widowed, but has four children named Teresa, Martin, Cynthia, and Timothy. Timothy is the youngest of the four and he is very ill. Mrs. Frisby saw how sick he really was and knew she had to go see Mr. Ages for medicine. Mr. Ages was a friend of her husbands, and he saved Timothy once before when he was bit by a spider. Mr. Ages thinks that Timothy has pneumonia and gave her medicine that she must give him. Mrs. Frisby had to hurry back before the cat, Dragon, would see her. She was on her way back when she spotted a crow. The crow was stuck on the fence. She unstuck the crow and found his name was Jeremy. She saved his life, so in return she climbed on the back of Jeremy’s back and he flew her home. She gave Timothy the medicine, and he got somewhat better in three days. The mother was worried, although, because it was getting warmed and when the weather gets warmer it soon means its Moving Day. Moving Day is when the plow comes through and it destroys the home, so the mouse family has to move. Mrs. Frisby is afraid her son will not be strong enough to move, especially since she was outside and overheard Mr. Fitzgibbons and his two sons, Paul and Billy, talking about plowing in five days. She also spotted a bunch of rats moving stuff into their hole; she brushed it off and got back to her children. Jeremy comes along, and says that there is an owl that might be able to help her Moving Day problem and he will take her to see him. Later that night they go see the owl. At first, Mrs. Frisby was nervous but once she mentioned her husband was Jonathon Frisby the Owl seemed pleased and told her to go see the rats. He said go ask for Justin at the front and tell him you need to see Nicodemus. That next morning she went to see the rats. All the rats were at a meeting, except for Brutus who turned her away because he was not Justin. On the way out, she sees Mr. Ages with a broken ankle hobbling along to the meeting. Mrs. Frisby tells him her problem, and he takes her back to see Justin and Nicodemus. She sees that the rats how power, that they stole from Christmas lights, and then also have an elevator that took her to them. They put her in a library as the meeting goes on, and she waits there until they are done. She is looking around the library and stops a sign that says “The Plan of the Rats of NIMH.” She kept looking around until another female rat came in. Mrs. Frisby frightened her, but the rat said her name was Isabella and she was a very young rat. Mrs. Frisby asked a lot of questions, and she found out that NIMH was a place some of the rats lived, and the Plan is where they are going to live, and no one likes Jenner, because he quit and went back to NIMH.
After the meeting, Arthur, Justin, Nicodemus, and Mr. Ages all meet with Mrs. Frisby. They decided that they are going to move their house to the other side of the rock so that the plow will not harm them. They will have to distract Dragon, so they will put sleeping powder in his food. Mr. Ages is normally the person who does it but since he is hurt Mrs. Frisby volunteered. She then was told that this is how her husband had died. She was upset, but knew she had to do it for her children. Nicodemus decides to tell his story about NIMH and her husband. The story starts out in a marketplace where they were all living and eating out of the garbage. One night with Jenner, they were captured and taken to a lab with about 5 dozen other rates. They were put in cages and were prisoners of Dr. Shultz, who they find out is a neurologist. He has two assistants, Julie and George. They injected all the rats with different things to see how fast they would learn. While there, they did a lot of test that involved mazes, shape recognition and electric shock. They were even taught to read. Test group A was so smart, that they learned to open up their cages because they read what it said. After a few days of planning, they found a way out, through the ventilation gap. Jonathon was one of the mice in NIHM, and he wanted to escape too. They decided to let him and 8 mice go with all the rats. Only two of the mice made it outside on the roof, and all the rats did. Jonathon and Mr. Ages were the only to mice to make it and they were the reason they got out of the metal screen. NIHM although made them bigger and stronger and smarter. They also made them not age like they should. They all searched for a home and finally found one in abandoned house. They stayed in the house and read books in study. The story continues on with Mrs. Frisby getting caught by the humans. Justin gets her out but she heard some bad news and needs to warn the others. She warns them and they leave at once, and only two didn't make it out alive.
